Thermal power is generated when a fuel is used to heat water, this gives off steam at high pressure, which in turn drives the turbines to create electricity. There are various energy sources harnessed to turn the generator and it chiefly depends on the fuels used and their availability

Thermal power plants are mainly classified by the type of fuel used:
  • Fossil fuel power plants: Coal thermal plants use coal as the fuel and steam turbine generator. Gas thermal plants use natural gas and combustion turbine
  • Nuclear: Nuclear power plants use the heat generated from a nuclear reactor to operate a steam turbine generator
  • Geothermal: Geothermal plants use steam trapped and extracted from hot underground rocks
  • Industrial Sources: Waste heat from industrial processes, blast furnace exhausts gas
  • Solar Thermal: Electric plants which use solar power to boil water, which in turn drives the generator
COAL BASED POWER PLANTS

Coal is the most abundant and widely spread fossil energy resource worldwide. Coal-fired power plants are among the oldest power plants in operation in the world. The development of coal-fired power generation in the global market depends to a large extent on the competitive position compared to gas-fired power, nuclear power, etc.

The main drawback with coal based power generation is the emissions of greenhouse gases such as Sox (Sulphur Oxide) and Nox (Nitrogen Oxide)gases which depend upon the Sulphur and Nitrogen content in the coal hence coal with low content of sulphur and nitrogen are usually considered for power generation.

There are different types of Coals available globally which vary upon their chemical composition. The rank of coal is based on the degree to which the original plant material has been transformed into carbon and can be seen as a rough indication of how old the coal is: the older the coal the higher the carbon content (generally). The ranks of coal (from most to least carbon content) are as follows: anthracite, bituminous coal, sub bituminous coal, and lignite. The coal with the highest carbon content is the best and cleanest type of coal to use. As you move down the coal rank the heat given out decreases and the dirtiness of the fuel and moisture content increases.
